William joins the band's "Almost Famous" tour, befriends guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and lead singer Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee), falls in love with "band aid" Elaine (Kate Hudson), and sees the real world. But throughout his assignment, William's mother (Frances McDormand) calls him often and warns him to stay away from drugs. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay; both Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand were nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

In the process, Arthur tries to prevent the evil wizard Maltazard the Cursed (voice of David Bowie) from taking over the Minimoys' land.
