  In this remake of "Three on a Match," Isabel, Fay, and Connie (Margaret Lindsay, Ann Sheridan, and Marie Wilson) were brought up together in an orphanage. Now, Isabel and Connie reunite when they bail Fay out of jail after her arrest for doing a striptease. They decide to meet every June to celebrate their birthdays. In the meantime, gambling, an extramarital affair, and divorce play roles in their lives, and events lead to the kidnapping of Isabel and her daughter Judy (Janet Chapman). The kidnapping culminates in Isabel jumping out of the window to her death. The police rescue Judy, and at the next reunion Fay and Connie are joined by Judy who takes Isabel's place.

Now, he finds himself running for mayor of the town and tries to explain that he did not serve in the Marine Corps, but he cannot convince his fellow citizens that his reputation is undeserved. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

  A case of mistaken identity results in a very funny story as an illiterate stooge, Georgi (Danny Kaye), is wrongly identified as a man of power in the government. When the real Inspector General (Rhys Williams) arrives on the scene, the corruption is brought to an end, and Georgi is appointed the town's mayor–free to live happily ever after with the woman of his dreams, Leza (Barbara Bates). Songs include "The Gypsy Drinking Song."

Kitty provides contacts at her publishing company, and Millie's book is published and becomes a best seller–as do her future books. Millie becomes even more successful than Kitty, and that leads to a long-standing feud between the women that will extend for years and include Millie believing that Kitty is trying to steal Preston and results in the end of Millie's marriage. Years later, the feud extends to Millie's daughter Deirdre (Dolores Moran) who is in love with Kitty's fiance Rudd (Gig Young). Kitty gives up Rudd to Deirdre, and the women end their rift and become inseparable old acquaintances.
