Tom Stark (Kevin Bacon) is the engineer when a fatal train/car crash occurs after suicidal Laura Danner (Bonnie Root) parks her car on the tracks. Laura is killed, but her young son Davey (Miles Heizer) survives the crash. One day, Davey appears at Tom's door, and Tom's wife, Megan (Marcia Gay Harden), demands that he be allowed to stay with them. Davey is struggling to get over his mother's death, and Tom is trying to deal with Megan's life-threatening cancer. Working together, the healing begins for both Davey and Tom. Alison Eastwood, the daughter of Clint Eastwood, makes her directing debut in this film.
