Lane (John Wayne) sets out with Jesse (Ben Johnson) and Mrs. Lowe (Ann-Margret) to find stolen gold that had disappeared after a train robbery. Mrs. Lowe tells Lane that her husband had stolen the gold and told her where the gold was hidden. She says that she wants to return it to the bank and clear the family name. They find the gold but then are attacked by banditos. They defeat the banditos, and Mrs. Lowe leaves on a train to return the gold. Then, a Pinkerton agent (Ricardo Montalban) arrives on the scene and tells Lane that he is following Mrs. Lowe because he knows that Mrs. Lowe has concocted the story about her husband and that she learned about the gold from the real thief as he lay dying. Angry at being tricked, Lane rides after the departing train.
