  This version of George Barr McCutcheon's novel involves baseball player Montgomery Brewster (Richard Pryor) who will inherit $300 million if he can obey the will's stipulations, which include spending all of the money within one month and keeping the inheritance a secret. His friends–baseball catcher Spike Nolan and girlfriend Angela (John Candy and Lonette McKee)–do not understand the reason behind Brewster's spending spree and try to help, but that task proves overwhelming.

  Martin (Keanu Reeves) is a young scriptwriter at a radio station in the early 1950s. To improve ratings, a well-known writer, Pedro (Peter Falk), is hired and takes Martin under his wing. Meanwhile, Julia (Barbara Hershey)–Martin's aunt (by marriage)–returns home in search of a new husband. With prompting from Pedro, Julia and Martin begin an affair, which becomes the storyline of Pedro's radio script. Falk is great!
