Originally a TV miniseries, this filmed version has been pared down by about an hour. A large asteroid is headed for Earth after being kicked out of its orbit by a comet. The asteroid could wipe out the entire population of Earth, so something must be done to destroy it. That something would be weapons fired at it, which does break it up into small pieces. The bad news is that the chunks all fall on Dallas, wreaking havoc. The last half of the film is concerned with the efforts of our heroes to save the people from the devastation.
