The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys   2002     3 stars    R, 105 min.
Genre: Comedy
Director: Peter Care
Cast: Kieran Culkin, Jena Malone, Emile Hirsch, Jodie Foster, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jake Richardson, Tyler Long, Melissa Suzanne McBride, Dylan Scott, Michele Seidman

It isn't enough that eighth-grader Francis Doyle (Emile Hirsch) and his best friend, Tim (Kieran Culkin), draw obscene comic books. Why not kidnap a cougar from the game preserve and set it loose in their teacher's (Jodie Foster) office? A very good coming-of-age comedy/drama set in the South during 1974.

Since become a Kevin Costner fan, I search out any films that he has starred in. His acting skills are superb, his character portrayal of the aging Tigers pitcher is extremely believable, and his sincerity of commitment to the girlfriend - Jane - that he finally realizes he cannot live without brings a happy crescendo to this love story of a man dedicated to being the best at his profession and his lifelong love.

I can watch this movie over and over again, Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston did an excellent job, outstanding performances. This was a perfect film for Kevin to be in. As a Tiger fan it made it even better.

I thought this movie was great. Kevin Costner does an outstanding job in this type of genre, and Kelly Preston's talents and abilities are unparalled in acting today. She can do more with a look than most actors can do with a thousand lines. This was a very good film, but Kevin and Kelly's performances raised it to an excellent status. I would like to thank both of them for sharing their craft with us, the movie goers, who every once in a while rely on two hours of a film to take us someplace we would never be able to go otherwise.

A great baseball/sports movie as well as love story. It was REAL ... as far as Kevin Costner playing this part. His athletic abilities were outstanding. I would recommend this to all audiences ... young and old.

Into the Wild   2007     3 stars    R, 140 min.
Genre: Adventure / Drama
Director: Sean Penn
Cast: Emile Hirsch, William Hurt, Brian Dierker, Vince Vaughn, Hal Holbrook, Marcia Gay Harden, Jena Malone, Catherine Keener, Kristen Stewart, Zach Galifianakis, Haley Ramm, Merritt Wever

Based on Jon Krakauer's nonfiction story, this is the tale of troubled Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) who, after graduating from Emory University, got rid of his possessions, donated his savings to charity, changed his name to Alexander Supertramp, and headed out on a journey through the American West. He eventually ended up living in an abandoned bus in the Alaskan wilderness, where he died of starvation four months after arriving in Alaska. The story is told in flashbacks after he arrives in Alaska, starting with his life at home. Emile resented his father's (William Hurt) materialism and his family's way of life. Heading west, he experienced several adventures, including kayaking down the Colorado River to Mexico, stopping at a homeless shelter, hopping on trains with the hoboes, and meeting assorted characters along the way. Narration of the saga is by Jena Malone who plays his sister in the film. Was Emile just seeking adventure, or was there a deeper problem within him? A good movie, though long. The film received two Academy Award nominations including Best Supporting Actor (Hal Holbrook).
