Ted (Ben Stiller) missed out on his high-school prom date with Mary (Cameron Diaz) years ago because of an embarrassing accident. Now, 13 years later, Ted realizes that he still cares for Mary and hires investigator Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to find her. Pat locates Mary in Miami, becomes interested in her, and tries to keep Ted away. Ted catches on and heads for Miami only to find even more suitors in his way.
