Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) was serving as a spokesman for the gay rights' movement when he was assassinated in 1978. This film involves the bigotry Milk experienced while organizing San Francisco's gay community to gain political clout and stand up for their rights. Milk is elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and fights for the rights of not only the gay community but senior citizens and union workers as well and, in the process, gives hope to those in need. Among his problems is his continuing battle with another supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin). The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Penn) and was nominated for six other Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (Josh Brolin).
