Confederate Generals Lee (Martin Sheen) and Longstreet (Tom Berenger) make preparations for battle while Union Col. Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels) moves his troops into position.   Advertising executive Bob Munro (Robin Williams) is scheduled for a meeting in Colorado at the same time he has scheduled a family vacation in Hawaii with his wife Jamie (Cheryl Hines) and kids–teenager Cassie (JoJo) and pre-teen Carl (Josh Hutcherson). Bob finds a solution: a cross-country trip in an oversized RV. The family embarks on the camping trip, but problems arise; in fact, they erupt in the form of the septic tank's contents. That's when they meet the Gornecke family (Jeff Daniels, Kristin Chenoweth, Hunter Parrish, Chloe Sonnenfeld, and Alex Ferris). As homeless campers, the Gornickes home-school their kids at the campground. The snooty Munros try to avoid the Gornickes, but they keep crossing paths, and, by story's end, the Gornickes have taught the Munros a valuable lesson in family relationships.
