Set in Indianapolis, this story is based on Dan Wakefield's novel about Korean War veterans trying to adapt to life at home. Sonny Burns (Jeremy Davies) and Gunner Casselman (Ben Affleck) are returning veterans who form a friendship. Sonny has a girlfriend, Buddy (Amy Locane), and his mother Alma (Jill Clayburgh) encourages the romance, but Sonny is not so sure that marriage to Buddy is what he wants because sexy Gail (Rose McGowan) is more to his tastes. Meanwhile, Gunner loves Marty (Rachel Weisz), but his mother Nina (Lesley Ann Warren) disapproves of his choice. As more and more problems develop, Sonny and Gunner begin to think that coming home to Indianapolis was not the best idea.
