She rescues the dog and then returns it to its owner, Judge Joseph Kern (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who says that he no longer wants it. The judge is a bitter old man, but, after a series of connections, Valentine grows close to him, and they both gain happiness through their friendship. Director Kieslowski was nominated for an Oscar.

  On his way to giving a speech opposing the use of the atomic bomb, Greek pacifist Z (Yves Montand) is attacked by right-wing political extremists. The Examining Magistrate (Jean-Luis Trintignant) is appointed to look into the matter and finds that there was, indeed, a cover-up involving the police. The film is based on the 1963 killing of Gregorios Lambrakis and employs flashbacks as a tool for intrigue. "Z" won Academy Awards for Best Foreign Picture and Editing and was nominated for Best Picture and Director.
