Irwin Molyneux (Michel Simon) is a successful writer of mystery novels–with the ideas coming from his daughter. His cousin (Louis Jouvet) arrives unexpectedly and, with the servants gone, Irwin's embarrassed wife (Francoise Rosay) must take on cooking duties while hiding in the kitchen. The cousin thinks that Irwin is acting suspiciously and tells the police that he thinks Irwin has murdered his wife. The mix-up gets resolved in this comedy.

Set in Vienna during the early 1900s, this story is narrated by Anton Walbrook who introduces a series of affairs in which a new character is involved with a character from the last scene. Beginning with young soldier Franz (Serge Reggiani) falling into the arms of prostitute Leocadie (Simone Signoret) who then has a short liaison with Alfred (Daniel Gelin), but he leaves her when he seduces housewife Emma Breitkopf (Danielle Darrieux). And on it goes until the seductions go full circle, and Franz is back with Leocadie.
