U.S. Marine Corps veteran William "Spooky" Macpherson (Val Kilmer) lost a leg in Iraq and, after drifting aimlessly, agrees to visit his friend Miguel Silva (Greg Serano) in Arizona. He arrives in Arizona and finds that Miguel is no longer there. He also realizes that the locals appear to be hiding information. After delving into the situation, Macpherson learns that Miguel has been murdered as part of John Rhodes' (Gary Cole) conspiracy to drive the Mexicans out of the area. Macpherson steps in, supports the Mexicans, kills Rhodes, and saves the town for them.

When he recovers, he moves into an abandoned bus, really gets to know Bo's family, and their lives and his are forever changed. While this story is told by the adult Bo (Amy Brenneman), her memories retain the fresh, innocence of 12-year-old Bo.
