This coming-of-age film is the story of 13-year-old Gemma (Winona Ryder) who lives with her crotchety grandfather (Jason Robards) in rural Texas. Her estranged mother (Jane Alexander) arrives and takes Gemma to Fort Worth for the summer. While there, Gemma meets mentally-challenged Rory (Rob Lowe), with whom she spends much time. Meanwhile, the deeply religious Gemma and her promiscuous mother head for a confrontation.

But, there is a problem: her "kidnappers" are FBI agents assigned to protect her from villains plotting to kill her. Now, a team of FBI agents, led by Alonzo Mosely (Yaphet Kotto), are on the trail of Larry and Madeleine who are racing to reach Chicago where Larry plans to solve the case by himself.
