  John Tobin and Dusty (John Wayne and George "Gabby" Hayes) team up to capture the outlaw Zanti (Earl Dwire) who killed John's parents years before. John takes Zanti prisoner after Zanti tries and fails to kidnap Dusty's granddaughter Ruby (Sheila Terry), but Marshal Walton (Jack Rockwell) believes that John is an outlaw. Meanwhile, Dusty is hiding in a mine where Zanti is shackled, but Zanti escapes. Now, John tracks Zanti into the desert where Zanti drinks poisoned water and dies. By story's end, John captures the other gang members, becomes the new marshal, and marries Ruby.

  Nina (Shirley Jean Rickert) is a half-Indian child who has inherited land that contains oil. Her guardian, Chris Morrell (John Wayne), tries to contact Nina's long-lost father Tom (Earl Dwire) because she needs his signature before collecting the oil lease. Meanwhile, Sam Black (Yakima Canutt) and his gang will stop at nothing to get their hands on Nina's inheritance. Chris does find Tom, and with cowhand Matt Downing (George "Gabby" Hayes), they fight Black and his gang in a final confrontation in the Snake River.

Martin finds that the gang is causing problems as the means to buy the land cheap, and he takes appropriate action.

  Sheriff John Higgins (John Wayne) thinks that he has killed his good friend, Dan Matthews (Frank Ball), during an outlaw gang shootout and turns over his badge to Ed Williams (George "Gabby" Hayes). Later, John meets Dan's sister Beth (Lucile Browne) who, not knowing of the role he may have played in her brother's death, hires John as her ranch foreman. Stagecoach robber Joe Dickson (LeRoy Mason) tells Beth about John's past, and, later, John learns that Joe is the one responsible for Dan's death. John calls together a tribe of Indians to track down Joe, and, no longer feeling guilty, John is now free to fall in love with Beth.
