  Josh (Kevin Zegers) is suffering emotionally after his father's death and has now been placed in a new school. One day, he finds an abandoned Golden Retriever, Buddy. It turns out that Buddy can shoot hoops, and since Josh wants to try out for the school basketball team, Buddy can help him practice. Josh makes the team, and he and Buddy perform at half-time. Buddy is a hit with the media, which is good IF the notoriety does not cause his previous owner Norm Snively (Michael Jeter) to reclaim him and cash in on his celebrity status.

The actors were handed a script but encouraged to improvise as the film was shot, and the fun begins as TV cameras bring Weimaraner "Beatrice," Shih Tzu "Miss Agnes," Poodle "Rhapsody in White," and Bloodhound "Hubert"–and their owners–into the homes of millions. The result is a very funny movie.
