Special effects are outstanding in this sci-fi story about what happens when an invention that sends sensory inputs into the brain ends up in the wrong hands. Scientists Lillian Reynolds and Michael Brace (Louise Fletcher and Christopher Walken) have been experimenting with their invention that can record sights, sounds, and feelings after the brain receives sensory messages. Michael uses the invention to get closer to his estranged wife Karen (Natalie Wood), and others begin to abuse it. Representing the government, Alex Terson (Cliff Robertson) steps in to take over the project. Problems ensue, and, after one worker tapes the experience of his own death, Michael is determined to play back the tape to honor his memory.
