It is the future, and America's economy has collapsed. Prisons are now privatized, and Warden Hennessy (Joan Allen) at Terminal Island Penitentiary has come up with a scheme to raise funds for running the prison: a three day pay-per-view "Death Race" and promises that the winner of the race will be released from prison. Terminal Island prisoner Jenson Ames (Jason Stratham) had been a race car driver, and Hennessy forces him to don the mask of dead racing hero "Frankenstein" and enter the race. Ames is in prison wrongly accused of murdering his wife and, if released, could once again be with his baby daughter. And the race is on–a combination of NASCAR and demolition derby with prison drivers accompanied by navigators from a women's prison. Racers are armed with grenade launchers, machine guns, flame throwers, and napalm as Ames and his navigator Case (Natalie Martinez) set out against other prison drivers–along with their chief opponent Machine Gun Joe (Tyrese Gibson)–in what is truly a race to the death.
