Pam (Sissy Spacek) reads her Connecticut newspaper and discovers that her high-school boyfriend, Russell (David Strathairn), is on death row for killing a policeman. While searching for a legal avenue that will lead to his freedom, Pam learns that Russell suffers from post-traumatic shock syndrome after fighting in the Vietnam War. An appeal is made, and it fails. As the execution date nears, tensions mount in the relationship of Pam and Keith.
