While the Marquis de Sade (Geoffrey Rush) is confined to an asylum under the care of Dr. Royer-Collard (Michael Caine), he is encouraged to purge his evil thoughts. But the Marquis has other plans and utilizes the services of Madeline (Kate Winslet), a laundress in the asylum, to smuggle his erotic novels to the public. Rush was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor and Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for Supporting Actor.
