She is befriended by Meg and Robert Windemere (Scarlett Johansson and Mark Umbers), but gossip rears its ugly head after Tom helps her out financially, and now stories abound that Tom and Mrs. Erlynne are having an affair. Everyone seems to believe the gossip–except Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson) who has fallen in love with Mrs. Erlynne, and then there is Lord Darlington who is smitten with Meg and sees the scandal as his opportunity to seduce her.
