In this film version of Patrick Dennis' novel–not to be confused with "Auntie Mame" (1958)–Lucille Ball is cast in the title role of Mame who during the 1930s' Depression Era enrolls her nephew Patrick (Kirby Furlong) in a private school and, with help from her friend Vera (Bea Arthur), tries to get into show business. Mame's financial problems are solved when she falls in love with and marries well-to-do Southerner Beauregard Jackson (Robert Preston) and goes to live with him on his plantation. Later, Beauregard dies, and Mame is left to contend with grown-up Patrick (now played by Bruce Davison), his girlfriend Gloria (Doria Cook-Nelson), and her bourgeoisie parents (Audrey Christie and Don Porter).    2 User Reviews
