This film, set in London during the 1950s, is based on a true story that led to an infamous murder trial. Ruth Ellis (Miranda Richardson) was living with her 10-year-old son when she met playboy David Blakeley (Rupert Everett). Their ensuing romance was doomed from the start and ends with Ruth killing David. Ruth was hanged on 13 July 1955; she is the last woman executed in Great Britain.

Karen then sets off on a series of sexual flings with gigolos arranged for by the Contessa (Anne Bancroft) until she is paired off with young Paolo di Lio (Olivier Martinez), and a doomed romance follows.
