  During its return from Venus, an American spaceship crashes into the waters off Italy. A cannister containing a specimen from Venus survives the crash, and a fast-growing reptile-like creature grows from the mass in the canister. While being studied, the creature escapes, of course.   Judy Holliday recreates her Broadway role of Manhattan telephone operator Ella Peterson who works for an answering service run by her cousin, Sue (Jean Stapleton). Ella gets involved with her clients and, while on the phone with playwright Jeffrey Moss (Dean Martin), Ella falls in love with him. Problems develop because Ella will not reveal her true identity, but Moss and other clients appear together at Ella's doorstep, and all ends happily. The songs include "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over." The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.

A small group of survivors–including Mike (Ernest Borgnine), Linda (Stella Stevens), Acres (Roddy McDowall), Belle (Shelley Winters), and Manny (Jack Albertson)–are led by Reverend Frank Scott (Gene Hackman) in a struggle to find safety in their world (ship) that has turned upside down. "The Morning After" won an Academy Award for Best Song. An Oscar was also received for the Visual Effects (Special Achievement Award), and seven other nominations were received, including Best Supporting Actress (Shelley Winters).
