  An obsessed car racer, The Driver (James Taylor), and his cohort, The Mechanic (Dennis Wilson)–along with The Girl (Laurie Bird) who tags along with them after they pick her up while she is hitchhiking–live to be on the road in a 1955 Chevy heading from one race to the next. They meet middle-aged G.T.O. (Warren Oates) in his 1970 Pontiac, and he challenges them to a cross-country race. With the prize of the winner getting the loser's car, the race is on, and the interplay between the race, the highway, and human nature begins.
