Lonely spinster Charlotte (Bette Davis) has been turned into an introverted woman by her domineering mother (Gladys Cooper) but changes her life around–thanks to a psychiatrist, Dr. Jaquith (Claude Rains). Charlotte embarks on an ocean voyage off South America and begins a shipboard romance with unhappily married Jerry Duran (Paul Henreid). While on the voyage, her mother dies, and Charlotte returns home. She meets Jerry's troubled daughter Tina, and the two bond. But there is not much hope of Jerry divorcing his wife. Bette Davis and Gladys Cooper were nominated for Oscars (Best Actress and Supporting Actress).
