Tibbs teaches Gillespie about crime solving methods and about prejudice. This film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Actor (Steiger) and was nominated for two others, including Best Director.

Meanwhile, another patient, Stephen (Peter Fonda), commits suicide because Lilith will not pay attention to him. The owner of a long-empty estate is anxious to sell and sends his lawyer (Patrick O'Neal) to take care of selling the property to the city for a bargain price. The history of the house is told in flashback, revealing that it was once an insane asylum where the cruel doctors had been slain by inmates set free by the owner. The inmates took up residence in the city and now, many years later, an axe-wielding killer is extracting revenge on the former inmates.
