Larry (James Belushi) is not happy in his life. His marriage to the beautiful Ellen (Linda Hamilton) isn't what it should be, his friend won't leave him alone, his car breaks down, his dog has bladder problems, etc. He KNOWS his life would had been different if he hadn't struck out in the bottom of the ninth inning when he was 15 years old. Despondent, he goes into a bar and tells his problems to the bartender (Michael Caine), who mixes a potion, and Larry walks out into the world that he would have experienced had he made that hit. He finds that all is not perfect in that world, either.
