  The Los Angeles Police Department wants to use the specially modified Blue Thunder helicopter to prevent terrorism during the 1984 Olympics and assigns Frank Murphy (Roy Scheider) to train as the pilot. Meanwhile, the project pilot, Col. F.E. Cochrane (Malcolm McDowell), is conspiring to take over the United States. Murphy uncovers the plot and takes to the skies in a battle for justice. This movie inspired the "Airwolf" TV series about a super helicopter that can do just about anything.
