  A Carmel, California, disc jockey Dave Garver (Clint Eastwood) becomes involved with murder and suspense because of a crazed fan, Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter), who calls night-after-night requesting that Dave play "Misty." One night, Dave picks up Evelyn at a bar and takes her home for a one-night stand. It isn't until later that Dave learns that Evelyn is the mysterious caller asking for "Misty" to be played. Evelyn refuses to just fade away and, instead, destroys Dave's home and belongings. Then, she turns her anger on Dave's girlfriend Tobie (Donna Mills) and plots to murder her.
