This story takes place in just one day at the small-town record store, Empire Records, where the teenage employees find TROUBLE is their middle names. The Music Town franchise wants to buy out Empire Records, which means that the employees' jobs are on the line. Their solution is to raise money and help their manager Joe Reaves (Anthony LaPaglia) buy the store. However, between work problems and personal problems, the task will not be easy.

Firmin Carter (Jared Harris), a suicidal lawyer, who introduces Ex into the high-class, but decadent, crowd. After Firmin changes his will to make Ex his heir, Firmin disappears, and Ex is the likely suspect. Different and offbeat, but amusing.
