He enlists in the Italian army during World War I and is taken under the wing of hospital orderly John (Eli Wallach). Nick falls in love with nurse Rosanna (Susan Strasberg) who tragically dies in an air raid. Through all the suffering, Nick finally attains maturity as a responsible man.
