As the means of getting information about a time bomb that terrorist Castor Troy (Nicholas Cage) has planted to destroy Los Angeles, FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) undergoes surgery to take on the appearance of Castor who is presumed dead. He believes this will give him the means of getting information from Troy's brother Pollux (Alessandro Nivola) about the time bomb. However, it turns out that Troy is merely in a coma, and when he recovers he turns the tables and assumes the identity of Archer–now, the fight to the finish is on.
