Prostitute or fashion designer–Joanna Crane (Kathleen Turner) cannot seem to decide which way to go. She works as designer "Joanna" by day but at night is streetwalker "China Blue." When Bobby Grady (John Laughlin) is given the job of looking for evidence that Joanna is stealing designs, he sees her turning into China Blue at night. Unhappily married to his wife (Annie Potts), Bobby falls in love with Joanna. But, a fanatic preacher, Rev. Peter Shane (Anthony Perkins), is determined to prevent Bobby and Joanna from ever getting together.

Along the way, Huck hooks up with the gambler, Jim (Graham Greene), for a series of misadventures as they travel the highways in a beat-up mini-van.

This very good story is about two mature women, Emma (Anne Bancroft) and Deedee (Shirley MacLaine), who have chosen different paths at turning points in their lives. One took career over family, while the other woman sacrificed fame for love and a family. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards but won none. The nominations included: Best Picture, Actress (two nominations), Director, Supporting Actor (Mikhail Baryshnikov), and Supporting Actress (Leslie Browne).
