This psychological Western explores the motives of Billy The Kid (Paul Newman) from his days in the Lincoln County cattle wars through the events that ended in his killing by Pat Garrett (John Dehner). Rancher Turnstall (Collin Keith-Johnston) treats Billy kindly, and Billy begins to change his ways until Turnstall is killed. Now, Billy sets out to avenge Turnstall's death and goes on a rampage. After Billy kills one of the murderers at Pat Garrett's wedding party, Garrett tracks him down and, in a final shootout, kills Billy.
