Juvenile detention Warden Walker (Sigourney Weaver) orders her charges to dig holes. The reason, unbeknownst to the prisoners, is to find the buried treasure of 19th-century bandit, Kissin Kate Barlow (Patricia Arquette). Newly hired as a Dean of Students at Belmont College in New England, Sarah Daniels (Sarah Jessica Parker) finds herself in the midst of chaos brought on by racially motivated crimes against Black student Simon Brick (Paul James). Sarah wants the police to investigate, but fellow Dean Catherine Kenney (Miranda Richardson) and President Winston Garvey (James Rebhorn) are more interested in maintaining the school's reputation than in finding the perpetrator. When Sarah escorts Black reporter Aaron Carmichael (Mykelti Williamson) around campus, they confide in each other about racial prejudice, and Sarah does some serious thinking. Later, Professor Burton Strauss (Beau Bridges) conducts a "Forum on Race," and a riot ensues. Now, Sarah finally must deal with her own prejudices.
