  A magician, Celine (Juliet Berto), and a librarian, Julie (Dominique Labourier), are transported to a mansion (is it real or imaginary?) where a strange melodrama keeps repeating itself. Celine claims that she is the nanny to Madlyn (Nathalie Asnar) whose widower father, Olivier (Barbet Schroeder), is being pursued by two women, Sophie (Marie-France Pisier) and Camille (Bulle Ogier). It is beginning to look like Sophie and Camille will stop at nothing to gain Olivier's love, and Celine is trying to shield Madlyn from the tension.

In this version, Heathcliff is now Roch (Lucas Belvaux) who sets tragedy in motion after the woman he loves, Catherine (Fabienne Babe), marries wealthy Olivier (Olivier Torres). Roch seeks revenge leading Catherine into despair and early death, but even death cannot part the ill-fated lovers.
