As this story begins, factory worker Francois (Jean Gabin) has locked himself in his apartment after killing M. Valentin (Jules Berry). Now, through flashbacks, the events leading up to the murder are revealed as Francois remembers the loves of his life, Francoise (Jacqueline Laurent) and Clara (Arletty), who Valentin had wooed away from him. Police surround Francois' home and, after an eerie night, break in at daybreak. Regarded by many as Jean Gabin's finest film.
