Bill (Richard Gere) is a 1920s' Chicago steelworker who sets out with his girlfriend Abby (Brooke Adams) and sister Linda (Linda Manz) to work in the wheat fields of the Texas panhandle. They find work on a farmer's (Sam Shepard) ranch. When Bill learns that the farmer is terminally ill and that he has fallen in love with Abby, Bill convinces Abby to marry the farmer as the means of inheriting a fortune. But, plans go awry, and tragedy awaits. Beautifully photographed (and won an Oscar for Best Cinematography).
