  This film is based on Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, which was a thinly veiled depiction of Louisiana Governor Huey Long's rise and fall in politics. This "governor of the people" is Willie Stark (Sean Penn) who begins his career as an idealist but uses corruption to obtain his goals. Stark's methods lead to his eventual downfall.

This movie is very funny as the ludicrous, beer-guzzling Buttermaker employs a special tactic–Amanda (Tatum O'Neal)–as the catalyst to make winners out of his foul-mouthed players. Followed by two sequels and remade in 2005.

  This story is set in 1976, when the American Basketball Association is about to merge with the National Basketball Association. Jackie is already a player and coach on the team, but, now, as the owner as well, his goal is to qualify as one of the teams that will merge into the NBA.
