Karl comes to her aid, denounces the Kaiser, and is also sentenced. Now, the French, along with Jules, arrive in time to free Mary and Karl who then sail back to the United States.

Blackie's friend, Father Mullin (Spencer Tracy), also believes that Mary should be singing somewhere other than at Blackie's bar. Mary is torn between working for Blackie and looking for a classier job. Then fate steps in when San Francisco is hit by the great 1906 Earthquake, and the film's climax takes place amidst the backdrop of fires breaking out, buildings swaying and collapsing, and the rubble brought on by the disaster. This epic film earned a number of Academy Award nominations (Best Picture, Spencer Tracy for Best Actor, and W.S. Van Dyke for Best Director) but ended up with only one Oscar–Best Sound Recording.

There he saves the life of an Indian girl (Ann Little) from the clutches of villain Cash Hawkins (Jack Holt). After Wynnegate marries her, his cousin's wife, Diana (Katherine MacDonald), arrives with the news that the cousin is dead. Knowing that Jim took the rap because he loved Diana, his wife commits suicide to allow Jim and Diana to reunite, which is what they do. They head back to England where he assumes the position of Earl of Kerhill. A better film than the earlier one, showing the beginnings of DeMille's desire to make extravaganzas.

The Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor, and many U.S. ships are out of commission. The assignment of Brickley's PT Boats is to run messages, but they do manage to shoot down three Japanese planes. Fed up with message-running assignments, Brickley's executive officer Lt. Rusty Ryan (John Wayne) asks for a transfer to destroyer duties. This story does not glorify war; instead, it tells it like it is–warts and all. Vintage John Ford.
