This offbeat, dark drama follows Mary Ann (Carroll Baker) who lives with her overbearing mother (Mildred Dunnock). Mary Ann is raped one night and, rather than tell her mother, she runs away, taking a job in a seedy store in Manhattan. Despondent, she finally attempts suicide by jumping off a bridge but is stopped by Mike (Ralph Meeker) who takes her in. While drunk, Mike tries to rape Mary Ann, but she gets away. She soon returns and asks him to marry her.
