Set in 12th-century Japan, this is the story of Moritoh (Kazuo Hasegawa) who becomes a hero after battling to overcome a revolt. Offered anything he wants as a reward, he asks for Kesa (Machiko Kyo), a married woman he fell in love with when she helped in defeating the rebels. But, Kesa is happy with her samurai husband, which leads to Moritoh's continuing efforts to win her. The film won the Grand Prize at Cannes, Honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Picture, and an Oscar for Best Costume Design.

In 18th-century Japan, father Isaburo Sasahara (Toshiro Mifune) and son Yogoro (Tsuyoshi Kato) are samurais who rebel against the feudal system when local rulers tell Yogoro that he must give up his wife, Ichi (Yoko Tsukasa). After Yogoro and Isaburo decline to give up Ichi, they are ordered to kill themselves. They refuse to commit hara-kiri, and a fight to the death ensues.
