  In this John Wayne movie, he plays wounded gunslinger Quirt Evans who becomes the patient in a family of Quakers. The daughter, Penelope Worth (Gail Russell), of the house falls for him and tries to keep him from going after his enemy Laredo Stevens (Bruce Cabot) who had murdered his foster father. Over time, Quirt changes his ways and begins life anew with Penelope.

Years later, the characters were brought to TV and were readily accepted when Black men took on the roles of Amos 'n' Andy.

  Lt. Colonel Owen Thursday (Henry Fonda) is annoyed because he has been sent out West to command Fort Apache in Arizona after serving valiantly during the Civil War. After his daughter Philadelphia (Shirley Temple) and Lt. Michael O'Rourke (Ward Bond) discover the bodies of mutilated soldiers murdered by the Apaches, Thursday decides to stir up the Indians for his own fame and fortune. One of his officers, Capt. Kirby York (John Wayne), tries to teach him the realities of co-existing with the Indians and tells him that the real problem is not the Apaches, but, instead, it is the corrupt Indian agents promoting the problems. York's words go unheeded, and Thursday leads his men into a disastrous situation after which he is labeled a hero by the press.

His daughter (Margaret Sullavan) eventually tries to cross the border into Austria with the man she loves (James Stewart), but she is killed trying to escape.

Unexpectedly, Helen arrives on the scene, and her boyfriend Bob (Dave O'Brien) goes to work for Thorne. But, fear not, Sadie's friend Ace (Charles Bickford) comes to the rescue and saves the day.
