When they are left with nothing because the estate passed to the eldest son, sensible Elinor (Emma Thompson) is the daughter who sees the farce of courtship to attain social status through marriage. In addition to the Oscar, the film had six other nominations, including Best Picture, Actress, and Supporting Actress (Kate Winslet).
