Former convict Will Parker (Christopher Reeve) answers an ad in the personals and takes the job of tending young, pregnant widow Elly Dinsmore's (Deborah Raffin) farm. They fall in love, and, just as their lives are looking up, Will is accused of murdering waitress Lula Peaks (Helen Shaver) after she kissed him passionately and then was found murdered the next morning. Elly believes that Will is innocent and hires a lawyer to defend him. Will is freed, and maybe they will now live happily ever after.
