  This is an interesting portrait of a late 19th-century actress, Esther Kahn (Summer Phoenix), who was born into a large Jewish immigrant family and raised on the streets of London. Her one interest was the theater, where she could escape life's realities. A good depiction of the acting profession.

He feels so much remorse that he tries to escape from his criminal world, an act that is filled with suspense. Alan Bates' performance as the racketeer/mortician, Jack Meehan, enhances the film.
