  Our hero, Ash (Bruce Campbell), is a store clerk who manages to get transported (along with his chain saw) back to the 13th century. In order to return to the present, Ash must steal the "Book of the Dead." Ash is aided in his task by Sheila (Embeth Davidtz) whose family and friends are being victimized by an army of skeletons. To the rescue comes Ash with his chain saw!

Later, she and her co-star Devon Berk (Justin Theroux) learn that when an earlier Polish version of the story was being filmed, a gypsy curse led to both of the lead players being murdered, but they continue on with the project. A bad decision as they lose their grasps on reality, and their lives spiral downhill into a nightmare.
