Telly Savalas plays the talkative prisoner in the next cell, and Thelma Ritter takes on the role of Stroud's controlling mother. Excellent performances by Lancaster, Savalas, and Ritter earned Academy Award nominations.

Dr. Marvin and his team develop a missile that, when fired, shatters the flying saucers. But big problems result from the attack, and the saucers crash into Washington, D.C., landmarks. An Oscar was also presented for Best Writing, and the film was nominated for Best Picture and Music.

Eventually, Savage cares for his men above all else, and the story concerns the stresses of command as the leader becomes too close to his men. Dean Jagger won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor and nominations were received for Best Picture and Actor (Gregory Peck).
